Wrong end of a Thriller

Holyport FC Reserves 7 –  5 Penn & Tylers Green FC Reserves

The Tuesday night trip to Holyport was a game where Penn & Tylers Green Reserves fancied they could come away with a solid performance and hopefully the 3 points. This however did not turn out to be the case and the manner in which the defeat occurred left a very bitter taste in the mouths of the Penn & Tylers Green players. In fact it is very hard to find humour in what was effectively a wasted evening.

A number of changes were made to the starting 11 with Wayne and Liam coming in and Andre and Graham making way. Penn & Tylers Green very much started on the back foot and struggled to really get a foothold in the game, this however didn’t prevent Liam from creating a number of chances for himself out of nothing. Holyport went close a number of times and were only prevented by a string of good saves from Will between the sticks.

Penn secure hard earned “Double” over Woodley Town

Penn secured their first double of the season when they overturned a half time deficit to record a narrow 3-2 win in a game that was a classic example of that famous cliché : “a game of two halves”.

HFC, as simple as ABC in B&B… eventually!!

Penn & Tylers Green FC 5 – 1 HFC

A trip to that local well known hotbed of football, Shelley Road, was the venue for PTGFC’s first round B&B game this year, although I cannot imagine Shelley finding any inspiration for verse in these surroundings. Penn & Tylers Green eventually ran out comfortable winners over Wycombe League Senior Section side HFC Athletic 5-1, after a nervy first 45 minutes when they hit the bar but then conceded a goal after 25minutes when the defence switched off and allowed the HFC forward to have a three course meal and a bottle of red wine before almost apologetically miskicking his shot into the corner of the net. The next 20 minutes were filled with frustration as Penn tried to claw their way back into the game, but the final ball was often over hit or players wanted too much time to play their passes.

Reserves suffer a set back at home

Penn & Tylers Green FC 1 v  3 Newbury FC

A 13:45 meet at Penn & Tylers Green FC for the big match against Newbury leaves the players with a morning of relaxation and a chance to catch up on the weeks news whilst mentally preparing yourself for the challenge ahead. That is unless that player is an enthusiastic scrap metal collector by the name of Albert O’Rourke. Now Albert is not your normal midfield general, by day he is a window fitter by night he takes notes whilst watching scrap heap challenge and by weekend he is an opportunist prowling the local streets in a beaten up old van looking for broken down cars and unwanted washing machines. I guess it is just a coincidence that he shares the same name as Rag and Bone TV Icon Albert Steptoe.

Good win at Flackwell

PTGFC Reserves  2  -  1  Flackwell Heath Reserves

It’s 09:49 am on a Saturday morning in September and I receive a message from Albert “I’ve just made myself a traditional Christmas dinner, good preparation for football? maybe not, but That’s. How. I. Roll.” Another message flashes through almost instantly “Albert sees the tawdry, unwanted orphanage of convention and burns it down with the matchbox of individuality. Today we destroy Flackwell, tomorrow we hunt geese.”

Saturday 10th September saw the visit of Flackwell Heath Reserves to French Meadows for the highly anticipated clash, a number of question marks surrounded this fixture however the main one on everyone’s mind was; How long would Weedon last at left back? I drew 15mins in the sweep stake.

No joy in Berkshire

Thatcham United Reserves 3 – 1 Penn & Tylers Green FC

It was not to be. Despite a battling performance Penn & Tylers Green FC had to return home empty handed. Against a strong Thatcham United Reserves side, who shaded the territorial advantage in the first half, Penn & Tylers Green FC did not let them turn that advantage into anything tangible. In fact shots on goal in the first half were about even.

Solid start for the Reserves

A packet of Marks & Spencer’s All Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies, a goblet of crème de menthe & ‘The Best of Color Me Badd’, you guessed it, its the contents of Alberts kit bag. But away from that, Penn & Tylers Green Reserves are back in action.

The early team news out of French Meadows sent a shock wave through the streets of Penn & Tylers Green FC with the inclusion of star attacker Graham Potts taking up residence between the sticks for the home team. This was unfortunately forced upon Penn & Tylers Green FC when the first five options were rendered unavailable, no worries Platty has assured everyone that G.Potts is some sort of Utility Man who will be delighted to take the gloves.

A slow but assured start for the “A”s

Penn & Tylers Green FC (A) 1 – 3 Walters Leisure FC

Saturday 3rd September saw the opening game of the season for Penn & Tylers Green new look A -team. They welcomed a newly formed team in Walters Leisure FC to French meadows for what was already there 3rd visit this season so far.

New A team manager Alan was fielding his strongest available side. Prior to the game unforeseen circumstances had seen a disgruntled Albie O’Rourke named back in the reserve team after a planned starting role in central midfield.

A Fab Start for Penn & Tylers Green FC Youth Team

Bourne End 2 – 6 Penn & Tylers Green FC

Bourne End entertained Penn & Tylers Green FC Youth Team this morning in the opening game of the season. There was a torrential downpour throughout the game making the conditions difficult from the start.

Penn & Tylers Green FC Youth Team started off lively and were keeping possession of the ball well but not making any clear cut chances. The wings were where most of the action was being played with Will Brangwin and Fabio Battista proving to be a real handful. But although Penn & Tylers Green FC Youth Team were looking more likely to score, a Bourne End corner wasn’t dealt with and their striker headed home at the near post past Conor Latta. Penn & Tylers Green FC Youth Team heads didn’t drop and five minutes later, a nice passing move involving Curtis Stone and Luke Cohen led to Tony Quigley finishing well into the bottom corner.

Woodley Town 1 – 4 Penn & Tylers Green FC

One hundred years ago, Woodley was a small rural community with less than one thousand inhabitants. Fifty years ago, although the population had grown a little, the majority of the homes were not on main drainage and there was very little street lighting. Bread and milk were delivered by horse and cart and on Sunday afternoons the Muffin Man made his rounds with a tray of muffins on his head and announcing his presence by ringing a handbell.

Today Woodley is a thriving town of approximately 26,000 residents and sits between Reading and Wokingham. Woodley is a diverse community with a busy shopping precinct, weekly markets and two leisure centres. Woodley is also home to the Museum of Berkshire Aviation and has a rich military aviation history and a football club.
