A Christmas Carol

Penn & Tylers Green FC 1 – Newbury Town FC 3

Dean Munday - Man of the Match again

This is our 2nd league defeat in a row. Against a strong but not unbeatable Newbury Town FC side we played Father Christmas today by gifting three goals to the opposition today. To be fair to them they took their chances and we did not and thus they deserved to win the game. They are a good side.

Newbury Goal Mouth Action

On a cold frosty afternoon with the frost never disappearing from the hedge end of the ground the pitch still played well and the spectators saw a good competitive game. Just to say thing straight at the beginning: There was an assessor there today but it did not influence the official a single bit, Steve Dolton had an excellent game.

The first 20 minutes was end to end and openings were created by both team. We had the better chances with Rino Sepede on a “one on one” with their keeper saving well. A few minutes later shortly after a Chris Hurst free kick we hit the post.

Scorer Liam Ratcliffe

In the 24th minute the “First Ghost of Christmas” appeared and we went one behind after a back pass to our keeper he tried to be Liam Brady and as he is not Liam Brady their forward nicked it off him and passed the ball into an empty net.

A Christmas Carol at French School Meadows today

Shortly after that the “Second Ghost of Christmas” appeared and Rourke Pickford kicked the ball out of his hand and slipped. The opposition player lobbed the ball over him but in a fantastic fashion Rourke managed to make up for his error and saved superbly pushing the ball over the bar. Shame that we could not mark properly as the resulting corner gave Newbury Town their 2-0 half time lead.

Second half saw more of the same. We had some more chances one of which produced a good piece of goalkeeping after an excellent move down the left. Another one ended with us hitting the bar. It just was not our day today. This became abundantly clear when the “Third Ghost of Christmas” decided to strike when the Newbury Town forward again passed the ball into the empty net with our keeper and defenders were left stranded at our D outside the box.

One thing we do this season and that is we never stop battling and as a result of that we got one back in time added on. Whilst the Secretary, who together with the Chairman was on ball boy duty today, retrieved the ball from “Beyond the Hedge” Liam Ratcliffe got onto the score sheet. Unfortunately it was too little too late.
