Penn & Tylers Green FC 1 – 2 Hungerford Town Reserves
Sorry, but there is not much to report today. It was a bad day at the office. The boys started like a house on fire and the first ten minutes it looked like when, not if, the first goal for the boys in the blue & white stripes was going to arrive. Well, it didn’t. Two good opportunities were squandered.

The village name of Prestwood is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means ‘Priest-wood’. There is evidence of settlement in Prestwood from the Middle Ages, when the village was mainly covered in oak, beech and ash trees. Jumping a few years, in 2001 the old Prestwood Leisure Centre was demolished. After a much-delayed rebuilding program over the following two years, the Sprinters Fitness Centre opened in its place in 2003.
The Tuesday night trip to Holyport was a game where Penn & Tylers Green Reserves fancied they could come away with a solid performance and hopefully the 3 points. This however did not turn out to be the case and the manner in which the defeat occurred left a very bitter taste in the mouths of the Penn & Tylers Green players. In fact it is very hard to find humour in what was effectively a wasted evening.
A number of changes were made to the starting 11 with Wayne and Liam coming in and Andre and Graham making way. Penn & Tylers Green very much started on the back foot and struggled to really get a foothold in the game, this however didn’t prevent Liam from creating a number of chances for himself out of nothing. Holyport went close a number of times and were only prevented by a string of good saves from Will between the sticks.
Penn secured their first double of the season when they overturned a half time deficit to record a narrow 3-2 win in a game that was a classic example of that famous cliché : “a game of two halves”.
A 13:45 meet at Penn & Tylers Green FC for the big match against Newbury leaves the players with a morning of relaxation and a chance to catch up on the weeks news whilst mentally preparing yourself for the challenge ahead. That is unless that player is an enthusiastic scrap metal collector by the name of Albert O’Rourke. Now Albert is not your normal midfield general, by day he is a window fitter by night he takes notes whilst watching scrap heap challenge and by weekend he is an opportunist prowling the local streets in a beaten up old van looking for broken down cars and unwanted washing machines. I guess it is just a coincidence that he shares the same name as Rag and Bone TV Icon Albert Steptoe.
It’s 09:49 am on a Saturday morning in September and I receive a message from Albert “I’ve just made myself a traditional Christmas dinner, good preparation for football? maybe not, but That’s. How. I. Roll.” Another message flashes through almost instantly “Albert sees the tawdry, unwanted orphanage of convention and burns it down with the matchbox of individuality. Today we destroy Flackwell, tomorrow we hunt geese.”
Saturday 10th September saw the visit of Flackwell Heath Reserves to French Meadows for the highly anticipated clash, a number of question marks surrounded this fixture however the main one on everyone’s mind was; How long would Weedon last at left back? I drew 15mins in the sweep stake.
It was not to be. Despite a battling performance Penn & Tylers Green FC had to return home empty handed. Against a strong Thatcham United Reserves side, who shaded the territorial advantage in the first half, Penn & Tylers Green FC did not let them turn that advantage into anything tangible. In fact shots on goal in the first half were about even.
A packet of Marks & Spencer’s All Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies, a goblet of crème de menthe & ‘The Best of Color Me Badd’, you guessed it, its the contents of Alberts kit bag. But away from that, Penn & Tylers Green Reserves are back in action.
The early team news out of French Meadows sent a shock wave through the streets of Penn & Tylers Green FC with the inclusion of star attacker Graham Potts taking up residence between the sticks for the home team. This was unfortunately forced upon Penn & Tylers Green FC when the first five options were rendered unavailable, no worries Platty has assured everyone that G.Potts is some sort of Utility Man who will be delighted to take the gloves.

One hundred years ago, Woodley was a small rural community with less than one thousand inhabitants. Fifty years ago, although the population had grown a little, the majority of the homes were not on main drainage and there was very little street lighting. Bread and milk were delivered by horse and cart and on Sunday afternoons the Muffin Man made his rounds with a tray of muffins on his head and announcing his presence by ringing a handbell.
Today Woodley is a thriving town of approximately 26,000 residents and sits between Reading and Wokingham. Woodley is a diverse community with a busy shopping precinct, weekly markets and two leisure centres. Woodley is also home to the Museum of Berkshire Aviation and has a rich military aviation history and a football club.

Maidenhead were the visitors to French School Meadows today and they played out a six goal thriller. Penn went in to the game unbeaten in two however they knew it wouldn’t be a walkover.
The first chance of the game came in the 5th minute when Maidenhead’s Adeyinka Adeniji’s shot was well saved by Matt Cannings in the Penn goal. Maidenhead looked threatening early on but the breakthrough came from the home side. A dangerous free kick was swung into the box by Chris Hurst, it was cleared only as far as Rino Sepede who’s deflected shot found its way into the bottom corner. 1 – 0.
